M A N I A by Fall Out Boy | Album Review

Hello everyone! Amidst an anxiety flare-up and a terrible reading slump, I’ve been streaming Fall Out Boy’s new album non-stop these past few days, and I have some thoughts!

M A N I A is the 6th studio album released by the American rock band Fall Out Boy. And it’s a pretty freakin’ amazing album, if I do say so myself.

Overall the sound is pretty different from their other work, but it doesn’t take away from the actual effect and sound of the album. It’s a bit less on the rock spectrum, and settled somewhere firmly into the alt. genre.

Song by song, here are my thoughts…

Young and Menace: I like this song. It’s not my favorite and the pacing is a bit off at times, but the drop is really what ties the whole song together.

Champion: Oof. This song gets me right in the feels every time I listen to it. Especially lately with my anxiety punching me in the face every chance it gets…. “If I can live through this, I can do anything”. These are the lyrics getting me through the day right now.

Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea: Despite the nonsensical title (at least, nonsensical to my knowledge) this is one of my favorite songs off of the album. It feels like a power anthem. I feel really pumped after listening to it.

HOLD ME TIGHT OR DONT: Definitely one of the more poppy songs on the album, it’s still a pretty good one. I really like the upbeat tone that it has, even though it’s not what we are usually used to hearing from the band. The lyrics definitely capture the struggle of an on-again/off-again relationship though.

The Last of the Real Ones: I freakin’ LOVE this song. It totally describes some of the relationships in my stories that I write and that makes it one of my favorites. It’s really hard to find music that fits your stories but when they do, they become special, don’t they?

Wilson (Expensive Mistakes): I’m kind of indifferent to this song. Even though it’s good, it just doesn’t strike me as something especially special. I will say that I love the lyrics though (and the video because it’s just adorable… call the phone number. It’s SO cool!)

Church: This song kind of reminds me of Hozier’s Take me to Church just because of the lyrical content. I really like this song, especially the choir element. It really adds to the effect of the song.

Heaven’s Gate: This is probably the only song off of the album that I don’t actually like. I’m pretty sure that’s an unpopular opinion, but I just think it’s too slow and… soulful? It’s just not my thing.

Sunshine Riptide: THE MOST POPPY SONG ON THE ALBUM. Featuring Burna Boy, this song is one that would be featured as a top 40 hit. I like it though. It’s really fun and beachy. I can definitely see jamming out to it in the summertime!

Bishop’s Knife Trick: This song feels so full of wanderlust that it hurts. With less than 18 weeks until I graduate, I feel this overwhelming urge to go out and just… explore. When I hear this song, I’m filled with a sense of novaturience and a desire to go on an adventure… like my youth is escaping through my fingers.

So here are the stats!

4/5 Stars

Favorite Song: Champion

Least Favorite Song: Heaven’s Gate

Overall I was really pleased with this album and the feelings that it evoked in me.

Thank you for reading! Have you listened to the album? What is your favorite song? Least favorite? See you soon, x
